NOW UNDER WAY: The Ultimate Challenge...

shutendohji3Saito-san has now left on Saito Challenge 8 and is making good time as he heads for his first waypoint near the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, on a leg of 2,988 nautical miles.

Following the Guinness Record completion in June 2005 of his seventh single-handed circumnavigation, Challenge 8 this time entails a far more daunting westbound non-stop voyage against the prevailing winds, waves, and currents.

With the help of an all-volunteer group of supporters, Saito-san acquired a “new” boat for Saito Challenge 8, a 1989 56-foot steel-hulled cutter-rigged sloop designed and built in Hawaii and given a total refit in Auckland, NZ.

Click to read the daily log or view the position report chart as Saito single-hands the 25,500 nm circumnavigation following the “Great Capes” route that is expected to take 7 months to complete non-stop and unassisted.
